Microorganisms are ubiquitous and have an indisputable role in the environment. Undoubtedly, no life on the Earth would exist without them. In recent years (or decades), many research laboratories have focused on microorganisms which occupy the human gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The so called gut microbiome consists of all types of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi, and their present collective genetic material. Out of them, bacteria are the most studied ones. They play an important role in the development of the immune system and the protection of human health. This topic will be presented at one of the lectures at the Summer School for Secondary School Teachers in 2021.
